Support for Rural Professional Development

In keeping with the principal goals of the SSA, which include disseminating and promoting the exchange of information about stroke, the SSA calls for applications from nurses and allied health professionals wishing to attend or to provide support for rural professional development.


The awards are available to all nurses, allied health professionals, paramedics, and managers of stroke services who are members of the SSA. To be eligible the investigator must:
1.    Be a registered nurse, allied health clinician, paramedic, or a manager of a stroke service;
2.    Be a member of the SSA at the time of application;
3.    Either work in a rural region and be attending a professional course in a metropolitan setting OR work in a metropolitan region and be visiting a rural site to share knowledge and gain an appreciation for different work environments;
3.    Attend a meeting within 6-months of the application deadline; and

The awards will be judged on the following criteria:
1.    Relevance of professional development to stroke;
2.    Potential for professional development;
3.    Potential for the activity to impact on health services in the region;
4.    Preference will be given to those who have not received a travel award from the SSA within the past 5 years.


Successful recipients must supply a brief report (150-200 word plain language summary) of the conference experience, within 6 weeks of attending the conference. This summary may be included in our newsletter and/or on the web site.


In submitting their application, applicants should provide any supporting documentation that they consider relevant. This may include a program, acceptance letter for course, a letter outlining the applicants role in the course, and copies of tax invoices. Please note that a $4,000 pool is being set aside by the SSA over a 12-month period. Therefore, it is likely that only a proportion of the total cost of the meeting will be available for each individual applicant.


Deadlines for applications will be March 31, July 31, and November 3 each year.
